What is a Recreational Pilot Certificate in Singapore?
The Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC) is a licence issued under Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) and recognised by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as a valid training path towards further CASA licensing. CASA is the aviation authority in Australia.
The RPC allows an individual to fly an aircraft with a Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) of 600kg, which usually consists of a two-seater aircraft. To qualify, an individual must clock a minimum of 20 flying hours: 15 hours dual (with instructor) and 5 hours solo.

Licence Requirements
To fly solo, an individual must be at least 15 years old, but training with an instructor (dual) can begin from the age of 14. Medical requirements are equivalent to those needed to obtain a driving licence in Australia. Individuals above 75 years old, or those diagnosed with epilepsy, diabetes (type 1 or 2), ongoing heart conditions, mental illness, or any medically significant condition, must obtain a signed statement from a doctor (GP) certifying that they are fit to drive in accordance with Austroads private motor vehicle driver licence health standards.
Students must also pass five examination papers with at least an 80% passing mark. The topics are:
- Pre-Solo
- Radio
- Air Legislation
- Human Factors
- Basic Aeronautical Knowledge
Licence Limitations
With the RPC, an individual is limited to a 25 nautical mile flying radius from the departure aerodrome, unless they obtain an additional cross-country endorsement. RPC holders cannot fly at night or conduct any instrument flying. The certificate allows flying in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace. After completing 10 solo hours and obtaining a passenger endorsement, an RPC holder can carry one passenger.
